Text Features: Bold Words, Glossary, and Index

Use bold words, the glossary, and the index to find and understand key information.

Some text features help you with important words and finding information. Bold print, or darker letters, marks key vocabulary words. When you see a bold word, slow down; it is important, and its meaning is often explained nearby. The glossary, at the back of the book, is a mini dictionary of the book's key words, listed in alphabetical order.

The index, also at the back, is an alphabetical list of topics with the page numbers where they appear. For example, if you want to know about 'volcanoes' in a big book about Earth, look up 'volcanoes' in the index and see 'pages 24 to 29'. If you forget what 'magma' means, check the glossary.
