Repeated Reading: Smoother Every Time

Rereading the same passage several times builds speed, accuracy, and expression.

Repeated reading means reading the same short passage three or four times, aiming to sound better each round. It works because each reading frees up your brain. On the first read, you're figuring out the words. On the second, you start noticing phrases. By the third, you can focus on expression and mood. Here is a simple routine. Pick a passage of about 100 to 200 words.

Read it aloud once and mark any word that tripped you up. Practice those words. Read it again, paying attention to punctuation. Read a third time, adding feeling. Some readers time themselves or record their voice to hear the change. For example, a reader might stumble on 'enormous' and 'cautiously' the first time, then read 'The enormous bear moved cautiously' smoothly by round three.

• 1Read the same short passage several times.
• 2Each round, focus on something new: words, phrasing, then feeling.
• 3Recording or timing yourself shows your progress.
