Rereading to Repair Understanding

Fluent readers reread a confusing part to rebuild the meaning.

Fluency and understanding work together. Sometimes you read every word correctly, but the meaning still doesn't land. That's a signal to reread, and it isn't a sign of weak reading. Strong readers do it all the time. Reread the confusing sentence, and if needed the sentence before it, paying close attention to phrasing and punctuation. Often, reading in better chunks makes the meaning click.

Try this: 'The old man the boats. ' On a first read it seems broken. Reread, thinking of 'old' as a group of people and 'man' as an action meaning 'to run or work': the old people work the boats. Most texts won't be that tricky, but the same strategy helps with long sentences in science or history books, where one misplaced pause can scramble the idea.

• 1Correct words don't always mean understanding.
