Latitude and longitude are lines that help us find places on Earth. Latitude lines run from east to west and tell us how far a place is from the Equator, which is at 0 degrees. Longitude lines run from north to south and show how far a place is from the Prime Meridian, which is also at 0 degrees. For example, the coordinates for New York City are about 40.7 degrees north (latitude) and 74 degrees west (longitude). This means New York City is north of the Equator and west of the Prime Meridian.
