Historical Fiction: Stepping Into the Past

Historical fiction places invented characters in a real time and place from history.

Historical fiction mixes real history with invented stories. The setting is a real time and place from the past, and the details of daily life, like clothing, jobs, travel, and tools, are accurate. But the main characters and their adventures are usually made up. Authors research carefully so readers learn about the past while enjoying a story.

For example: 'In 1849, eleven-year-old Abigail travels west with her family by covered wagon. Along the trail, she keeps a journal as they cross rivers, run short of water, and meet other travelers heading west. ' Wagon trains really did travel west in that era, but Abigail and her journal are invented.

To tell historical fiction from a history book, ask: 'Is this a story about made-up characters, or a report of real events? ' Historical fiction lets you imagine what it felt like to live long ago.
