We planted a vegetable garden in the spring. We put in seeds for carrots, beans, and tomatoes. We watered them every day. We pulled weeds. We waited. Nothing seemed to happen at first. Then tiny plants appeared. They grew bigger. We had to put stakes for the tomatoes. One day we saw a green tomato. We were so excited. We waited for it to turn red. Finally we picked our first tomato. We had a salad with our own vegetables. It tasted amazing. We had discovered that growing food takes time. Perhaps next year we would plant more. We had learned that patience pays off. The garden was full of surprises. We found a pumpkin plant we had not planted. A seed must have blown in. We let it grow. In the fall we had a pumpkin. The adventure of the garden was the best surprise of all.
