Weathering and erosion are natural processes that change the Earth's surface. Weathering happens when rocks break down into smaller pieces due to wind, rain, or temperature changes. For example, when water seeps into cracks in rocks and freezes, it can cause the rocks to crack and break apart. Erosion is the movement of those broken pieces by forces like water, wind, or ice. A river can carry small rocks and soil downstream, shaping the land as it goes. Together, weathering and erosion help create new landscapes, like valleys and canyons, over long periods of time.
