Long division is a way to divide larger numbers step by step. To start, you write the number you want to divide (the dividend) inside a division symbol and the number you are dividing by (the divisor) outside. For example, if you want to divide 144 by 12, you would set it up like this: 144 รท 12. First, see how many times 12 fits into the first part of 144, which is 14. It fits once, so you write 1 above the line. Then, multiply 1 by 12 to get 12, subtract it from 14, leaving 2. Bring down the next number, which is 4, to make 24. Now, see how many times 12 fits into 24, which is 2. Write that above the line, and you find that 144 รท 12 equals 12.
