📖 1 of 2

Soil formation happens over a long time through a process called weathering. Weathering breaks down rocks into smaller pieces, which mix with organic matter like dead plants and animals. For example, when leaves fall and decompose, they create nutrients that enrich the soil. Rainwater also helps by carrying minerals from rocks into the soil.

This mixture of tiny rock pieces, water, air, and organic matter makes up soil. Different types of soil can form depending on the rocks and plants in the area, leading to a variety of ecosystems like forests and grasslands.
