Westward Expansion was the movement of settlers and immigrants into the western part of the United States during the 19th century. People traveled west for many reasons, including the search for land, gold, and new opportunities. The U.S. government encouraged this expansion by passing laws like the Homestead Act, which gave land to those willing to farm it. One famous example is the California Gold Rush, which began in 1849 when thousands of people rushed to California to find gold. This movement changed the landscape of America and led to the growth of new towns and cities.
