Our school had an art contest. The theme was My Favorite Place. I decided to draw the park where I played. I worked on my drawing for a week. I drew the trees and the swings. I drew the sky. I used colored pencils. I tried to make it look real. Gradually the picture came together. I was proud of it. I turned it in. I did not think I would win. There were so many good drawings. A week later the principal announced the winners. My name was called. I had won second place. I could not believe it. I had discovered that I could do something I did not know I could do. The experience of winning was amazing. I went up to get my certificate. Everyone clapped. My teacher said my drawing was magnificent. I had considered not entering. I was glad I had. The opportunity had been there. I had taken it. I brought my certificate home. I hung it on my wall. I would never forget that day. Perhaps I would enter again next year. Maybe I would try for first place.
