I found an old photograph in a drawer. It was black and white. It showed a woman and a child. I did not know who they were. I asked my grandmother. She said the woman was her mother. The child was her. She had never shown me the picture before. I had discovered a piece of family history. My grandmother told me stories. She said her mother had been kind and strong. She had worked hard. She had loved to read. Gradually I learned more about my family. I had never had an experience like that. I had considered that the past was boring. I was wrong. The past was full of stories. The opportunity to learn from my grandmother was a gift. I asked her to tell me more. She said she would. I took a picture of the photograph with my phone. I wanted to keep it. I had discovered that our family is part of who we are. The old photograph had opened a door. I would walk through it. I would ask more questions. I would listen. The photograph was magnificent. It was the start of something important.
