Review: Using Every Tool to Unlock a New Word

Combine context clues, word parts, figurative language, and reference tools to understand new words.

Now you have a whole toolbox for new words. Here is the order to try them. First, check the context: is there a definition, synonym, antonym, or example clue, or does the whole passage suggest the meaning? Second, check the word parts: roots, prefixes, and suffixes. Third, ask if the phrase is figurative, like a simile, metaphor, personification, or idiom.

Fourth, if you are still unsure, use a dictionary or glossary and pick the meaning that fits. Try this: 'Unlike her cautious brother, Rosa was audacious and climbed the tallest tree. ' 'Unlike' is an antonym clue: audacious means the opposite of cautious, so it means bold and daring. One tool was enough here.

• 1Try context clues first.
• 2Then word parts, then check for figurative language.
• 3Use a dictionary or glossary when you are still unsure.
