Review: Putting Comprehension Strategies Together

Use prediction, inference, structure, and summary together on one passage.

Strong readers use many strategies at once. Read: 'For years, the town's only bridge was old and narrow. Trucks had to wait an hour to cross, and in spring, the river rose so high that the bridge closed. In 2019, the town voted to build a new, wider bridge with raised supports. Now traffic flows smoothly, and the bridge stays open all year.

' Structure: problem and solution, with signal clues like 'wait', 'closed', and 'build a new'. Inference: the townspeople were frustrated by the old bridge, because they voted to replace it. Summary: 'The town replaced its old, narrow bridge with a wider, raised one, which ended long waits and spring closures. ' Each strategy shows a different layer of the text.

• 1Use several strategies on the same passage.
• 2Identify the structure, make inferences, summarize.
• 3Each strategy reveals a different layer.
