Finding Your Just-Right Pace

A good reading rate is fast enough to sound natural but slow enough to understand.

Faster is not always better. The right pace sounds like natural talking and lets you understand what you read. Reading too slowly breaks sentences apart, so you forget the beginning before you reach the end. Reading too fast makes you skip words, ignore punctuation, and miss meaning. Good readers also shift speed.

They slow down for tricky parts, important facts, or exciting moments, and move a bit faster through easy or familiar parts. Imagine a science passage: 'Water boils at 100 degrees Celsius at sea level. ' That fact is worth slowing down for. In a story where a character is running for the bus, a slightly quicker pace can match the action.

A simple test: if you can tell someone what you just read, your pace is working.

• 1The right pace sounds like natural talking.
• 2Too slow or too fast both hurt understanding.
• 3Slow down for tricky or important parts.
