The Moon goes through different phases as it orbits around the Earth. These phases happen because of the way sunlight shines on the Moon at different angles. The main phases are new moon, first quarter, full moon, and last quarter. For example, during a full moon, the entire face of the Moon is illuminated by the Sun, making it bright and round in the night sky. In contrast, during a new moon, the Moon is between the Earth and the Sun, so we can't see it at all! This cycle of phases takes about 29.5 days to complete.
