Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. It can be found in three main states: solid, liquid, and gas. Solids, like ice, have a definite shape and volume. Liquids, such as water, take the shape of their container but have a fixed volume. Gases, like the air we breathe, fill the entire space they are in and do not have a fixed shape or volume. The properties of matter, such as color, density, and boiling point, help us identify and classify different materials around us. For example, gold is a shiny solid that is very dense, making it easy to recognize and valuable in jewelry.
