The Underground Railroad was a secret network that helped enslaved people escape to freedom in the 1800s. It wasn't an actual railroad, but rather a series of safe houses and routes where they could find shelter and assistance. Abolitionists, who believed that slavery was wrong, played a big role in this network. For example, Harriet Tubman, a former enslaved person, made many trips back to the South to guide others to safety. People who helped were called 'conductors,' and they often risked their lives to protect the escapees. The journey was dangerous, but the hope of freedom drove many to take the risk.
