Plate tectonics is the theory that explains how the Earth's outer shell, called the lithosphere, is divided into large pieces called tectonic plates. These plates float on a softer layer of the mantle beneath them and are constantly moving, although very slowly. The movement can cause earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and the formation of mountains. For example, the Himalayas, the tallest mountain range in the world, were formed by the collision of two tectonic plates: the Indian Plate and the Eurasian Plate. When these plates push against each other, they create powerful forces that raise the ground, forming mountains. Scientists study plate tectonics to understand how our planet changes over time and how it affects the environment around us.
