The greenhouse effect is a natural process that warms the Earthโ€™s surface. When the Sunโ€™s energy reaches the Earth, some of it is absorbed and warms the planet, while the rest is reflected back into space. Greenhouse gases, like carbon dioxide and methane, trap some of this heat in the atmosphere. This is similar to how a greenhouse keeps plants warm. For example, on a sunny day, the inside of a car can get very hot even if the outside temperature is cooler. This happens because sunlight enters the car and warms the seats, but the heat has a hard time escaping. Without the greenhouse effect, our planet would be too cold to support life. However, too much greenhouse gas can lead to global warming, which can change our climate and weather patterns.
