📖 1 of 2

Irony is a literary device that occurs when there is a contrast between what is expected and what actually happens. It can be a surprising twist or an unexpected outcome. There are different types of irony, but one common type is situational irony. For example, imagine a fire station burning down. You would expect a fire station to be the safest place from fires, but in this case, it becomes the opposite. Another type is verbal irony, where someone says the opposite of what they really mean.

📖 2 of 2

For instance, if a student who failed a test says, 'Great! I really aced that exam! ' they are using verbal irony because they are not actually happy about their performance. Irony makes stories interesting and can add humor or depth to the message.
