Biodiversity refers to the variety of living things in a specific area, including plants, animals, fungi, and microorganisms. It helps ecosystems function well by providing different roles; for example, some plants produce oxygen, while others provide food. Healthy biodiversity means that ecosystems can adapt to changes, like climate shifts or diseases. A great example of biodiversity is a rainforest, where thousands of species live together, interacting in complex ways. Each species has its own role, like pollinators helping plants reproduce or predators controlling animal populations. When biodiversity is high, ecosystems are more resilient and can better withstand challenges. However, when species go extinct, it can upset the balance, leading to negative effects on the environment.
