Minerals and rocks are the building blocks of the Earth's crust. A mineral is a naturally occurring solid substance with a specific chemical composition and structure. For example, quartz is a common mineral made of silicon and oxygen. Rocks, on the other hand, are made up of one or more minerals. There are three main types of rocks: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. Igneous rocks form from cooled molten rock, like granite. Sedimentary rocks, such as sandstone, are created from layers of sediment that have hardened over time. Metamorphic rocks, like marble, are formed when existing rocks are changed by heat and pressure. Understanding minerals and rocks helps us learn about the Earth's history and the processes that shape our planet.
