Photosynthesis is the process by which plants, algae, and some bacteria use sunlight to make their own food. It occurs mainly in the leaves of plants, where special cells contain a green pigment called chlorophyll. This pigment captures sunlight and uses its energy to combine carbon dioxide from the air and water from the soil to create glucose, a type of sugar that serves as food for the plant. During this process, oxygen is released into the air, which is essential for humans and animals to breathe. For example, a sunflower uses photosynthesis to grow tall and produce seeds. Without photosynthesis, life on Earth would be very different, as it provides food and oxygen for many living things.
