Medieval Europe, often called the Middle Ages, lasted from about the 5th to the late 15th century. This period followed the fall of the Roman Empire and was marked by feudalism, a system where land was owned by lords and worked by peasants. Lords provided protection and land to the peasants in exchange for their labor. For example, a lord might give a farmer a small piece of land to grow crops, while the farmer would give a portion of the harvest to the lord. During this time, castles were built for defense, and the Catholic Church played a major role in daily life, influencing everything from education to politics. The Medieval period also saw the rise of knights, who were trained warriors serving the lords, and participated in tournaments to display their skills. Understanding this time helps us learn about the roots of modern European society.
