Flashback: Stepping Back in Time

Recognize flashbacks and explain why an author interrupts the present to show the past.

A flashback is a scene that interrupts the main timeline to show something that happened earlier. Authors signal flashbacks with clues: a shift to past perfect tense ('she had been'), phrases like 'three summers ago' or 'she remembered,' a change in setting, or a section break. Here is an original example: 'Mara gripped the starting block. Her knees shook. Three summers ago, she had stood on this same block and frozen while the whole crowd watched. The whistle blew.

' The middle sentence pulls us back to an earlier failure, then the whistle snaps us back to now. Why use a flashback here? It explains why her knees shake and raises the stakes: this race is her chance to overcome that memory. Flashbacks usually reveal backstory, explain a character's motivation, or create contrast between past and present. When you retell a story with a flashback, decide whether to tell events in the order they happened or the order the author presented them, and say which.
