Repetition and Parallel Structure

Analyze how repeating words and sentence patterns adds emphasis and rhythm.

Authors and speakers repeat words, phrases, or sentence patterns to emphasize ideas and make them memorable. Repetition of a phrase draws attention to a key point. Parallel structure repeats the same grammatical pattern: 'We came to learn, to build, and to lead. ' Each part uses 'to' plus a verb, which creates rhythm and makes the ideas feel equally important. Here's an original speech excerpt: 'We need parks where children can play. We need parks where neighbors can meet.

We need parks where everyone, young or old, feels welcome. ' The repeated 'We need parks where' builds emphasis with each sentence, and the final, longest sentence acts as a climax. Repetition can also show urgency, unity, or emotion. When analyzing it, quote the repeated element, describe the pattern, and explain the effect: what idea is emphasized, and how the rhythm affects the audience. Be careful to distinguish purposeful repetition from simple wordiness, which adds no meaning.
