Evaluating Reasoning: Sound or Faulty?

Spot common reasoning errors such as hasty generalizations and false cause.

Even with real evidence, the reasoning that connects evidence to a claim can be faulty. Grade 8 readers are expected to evaluate it. Three common errors appear often. A hasty generalization jumps from a few cases to a broad rule: 'Two new restaurants downtown closed, so new businesses always fail here. ' A false cause assumes that because one thing happened before another, it caused it: 'I wore my blue socks and we won, so the socks made us win.

' An either-or claim pretends there are only two options when there are more: 'Either we cancel the trip or someone will get hurt. ' Sound reasoning, by contrast, uses enough evidence, considers other explanations, and admits limits. To evaluate, ask: Does the conclusion really follow? Could something else explain the evidence? Are there options the author left out? Faulty reasoning is not always a lie; often it is a shortcut, but a careful reader refuses to take it.

• 1Hasty generalization: too few cases for a broad rule.
• 2False cause: before does not mean because.
• 3Either-or: pretending there are only two options.
