Fiction and History: Comparing a Story with the Record

Compare a fictional portrayal of a time or event with a historical account of it.

Historical fiction tells invented stories set in real times and places. Comparing it with a historical account shows how authors use, change, or invent details. Suppose a novel describes a girl working in a nineteenth-century cotton mill, with the deafening noise, the long shifts, and her friendship with an older worker. A history text about the same era reports that many mill workers were young, worked twelve or more hours a day, and suffered hearing damage from the machines.

The novel's noise and long shifts match the record. Her friendship is invented, and that is fine; fiction adds personal experience that history books rarely capture. A good comparison asks three things. What does the fiction keep accurate? What does it invent or change? Why might the author make those choices? Here, invented characters let readers feel what the facts mean. But if a novel changed key facts, such as a date or a cause, readers should know where fiction ends and the record begins.

• 1Historical fiction mixes real settings with invented stories.
• 2Compare what is kept, what is invented, and why.
• 3Fiction can show how history felt; records show what happened.
