Fluency Frees Your Brain for Meaning

Learn why smooth, accurate reading matters even after you can decode every word.

By middle school you can sound out almost anything, so why practice fluency? Because attention is limited. Every second spent stumbling over words is a second not spent thinking about what they mean. Fluent readers read accurately, at a suitable rate, and with expression that follows the sense of the sentence. Try this: read 'The committee, which had argued for weeks, finally voted to rebuild the bridge. ' A choppy reader says each word separately and reaches the end unsure who voted.

A fluent reader groups 'which had argued for weeks' as one aside, lowers the voice slightly, then returns to 'finally voted. ' The meaning arrives with the words. Fluency is not speed for its own sake; reading too fast is just as harmful as reading too slowly if understanding drops. The goal is a pace where your mind can keep up with the ideas.

• 1Fluency = accuracy + suitable rate + expression
• 2Less effort on words leaves more attention for meaning
• 3Faster is not better if understanding drops
