Surface area is the total area that the surface of a three-dimensional object occupies. To calculate the surface area of common shapes, you add up the areas of all their faces. For example, letโ€™s consider a cube, which has six square faces. If each side of the cube measures 4 centimeters, the area of one face is 4 cm ร— 4 cm = 16 cmยฒ. Since there are six faces, you multiply 16 cmยฒ by 6, giving a total surface area of 96 cmยฒ. Surface area helps us understand how much material is needed to cover an object, like paint on a box or wrapping paper around a gift. Knowing how to calculate surface area is useful in real-life situations such as construction, design, and even cooking, where you might need to know the amount of frosting needed for a cake.
