📖 1 of 2

Dialect and register are two ways language can change depending on who is speaking and the situation. A dialect refers to a specific form of a language that is used in a particular region or by a certain group of people. For example, in the United States, people in the South might say 'y'all' instead of 'you all. ' On the other hand, register is about the level of formality in language.

📖 2 of 2

You might use a formal register when writing an essay, using complete sentences and proper grammar, while in casual conversations with friends, you might use slang or abbreviations. Understanding dialects and registers helps people communicate effectively in different settings and with various audiences. For instance, a student might speak differently when chatting with friends than when giving a presentation in class.
