Adaptation is a process that helps living organisms survive in their environment. It occurs when a species develops traits that enhance its ability to live, reproduce, and thrive in specific conditions. For example, the thick fur of polar bears is an adaptation to the cold Arctic environment. This fur keeps them warm and helps them trap heat. Over many generations, polar bears with thicker fur were more likely to survive and pass on this trait to their cubs. Adaptations can be physical, like the long neck of a giraffe that allows it to reach high leaves, or behavioral, such as birds migrating to warmer areas during winter. These changes are often the result of natural selection, where the best-suited traits are preserved and passed down. Understanding adaptation helps scientists learn how species evolve and respond to changes in their habitats.
