The slave trade refers to the forced transportation of people, primarily from Africa, to work as slaves in the Americas and elsewhere. This practice began in the 16th century and lasted for several centuries. Millions of Africans were captured and sold by slave traders, often through violent means. Once aboard ships, enslaved people faced terrible conditions, crammed tightly in dark spaces for weeks. They were then sold at markets in the Americas to work on plantations or in households. One notable example is the triangular trade, where European ships transported goods to Africa, exchanged them for enslaved people, and then brought those individuals to the Americas. The slave trade had devastating effects on African communities and contributed to the growth of economies in the Americas, but it also caused immense suffering and loss of life.
