Rating Books with Clear Criteria

Explain your ratings using consistent criteria instead of just a gut feeling.

Saying 'I'd give it 3 stars' means little unless you explain why. Using consistent criteria makes your ratings more useful to you and to others. Common criteria include characters (do they feel real and change?) , plot and pacing (does it hold your attention?) , writing style (is the language vivid or clear?) , ideas (does it make you think?) , and personal impact (did it stay with you?) You don't need to weigh them equally; decide which matter most to you. Example: a student rates an original fantasy novel.

Characters: strong, especially the anxious young mapmaker. Plot: exciting, but the ending felt rushed. Style: beautiful descriptions. Ideas: interesting questions about loyalty. Impact: thought about it for days. Overall: 4 out of 5, losing a point for the rushed ending. Notice how criteria turn a vague feeling into a reasoned judgment. They also show that a book can be well-written but not to your taste, and that's an honest, useful thing to say.
