Graphic Novels as Serious Reading

Read graphic novels skillfully by attending to both images and words.

Graphic novels are complete, real reading, and they require skills of their own. Meaning comes from words and images working together, so you must read both. Panels show moments; the gutters, the spaces between panels, ask your mind to fill in what happens in between. Panel size and shape control pacing: a big full-page panel slows you down for an important moment, while many small panels speed action up. Speech bubbles carry dialogue, thought bubbles show thinking, and caption boxes often hold narration.

Visual details, such as a character's expression, colors, and what's in the background, can reveal feelings or foreshadow events that words never mention. Example: in an original comic, a character says 'I'm fine' while the panel shows her hands clenched and the colors turn grey. The image tells you she is not fine. Graphic novels span every genre, including memoir and history. Slow down, look at each panel fully, and you'll notice layers you'd miss by reading only the words.
