Listening to Audiobooks as Real Reading

Use audiobooks to enjoy more stories and build comprehension and vocabulary.

Listening to an audiobook is a real way to experience a book. You still follow the plot, picture scenes, understand characters, and learn new words. Audiobooks are especially helpful for books with accents, dialects, or poetry, since a skilled narrator brings voices and rhythm to life. They also let you enjoy books during times when reading print isn't possible, like a long car ride or walking the dog. To listen well, choose a speed that lets you follow comfortably; you can usually adjust it.

If your mind wanders, rewind thirty seconds rather than pressing on. Some readers like to listen while following the print version, which helps with pronunciation of unusual names and builds fluency. For example, a student struggling with a classic's long sentences might listen to a chapter while reading along, then read the next chapter in print alone. Mixing formats is a smart strategy, not a shortcut. What matters is that you understand and enjoy the story.
