Starting and Running a Book Club

Learn how to organize a book club where everyone gets to share ideas.

A book club is a small group that reads the same book and meets to talk about it. Starting one with friends or classmates is a great way to read more and hear new perspectives. Begin with a few practical decisions: how many members (four to eight works well), how often to meet (every two or three weeks), and how to choose books (take turns or vote from a short list). Set a reading target for each meeting, such as chapters 1–8, so no one gets spoiled. Roles keep discussions lively.

A discussion leader brings questions. A connector links the book to real life or other books. A passage picker chooses a favorite or puzzling section to read aloud. A word finder shares interesting vocabulary. Rotate roles each meeting. Ground rules matter too: everyone gets a turn, disagreement is welcome but respectful, and no spoilers beyond the target. A good club leaves people curious about the next book.

• 1Decide size, meeting schedule, and how to choose books
• 2Set reading targets to avoid spoilers
• 3Use rotating roles and respectful ground rules
