Our class organized a river cleanup. The river near our school had trash along the banks. We were determined to make a difference. We got permission from the city. We got gloves and bags. On Saturday we met at the river. The challenge was to collect as much trash as we could. We worked in teams. We found bottles and cans and plastic. We filled dozens of bags. We learned to appreciate how much waste people leave behind. We had a responsibility to our environment. The cleanup had a positive influence on the river. It looked better when we were done. We had started a tradition. We would do it every year. Our community had come together. We had achieved something good. We had discovered that small actions add up. We had made the river cleaner. We were proud. The river cleanup had taught us about citizenship. We would never forget that day. We had built a habit of care.
