I volunteered at the animal shelter. I walked dogs and cleaned cages. I was determined to help. The challenge was that some animals were scared. I had to be patient. I had a responsibility to be kind. I learned to appreciate how much shelters need help. My time had a positive influence on the animals. They needed attention. It became a tradition for me to go every Saturday. The shelter was a community of staff and volunteers. We had achieved a place where animals were cared for. I had discovered that volunteering was rewarding. I would never forget the dogs I had walked. The shelter had taught me about compassion. I was grateful to be part of it.
