Recognizing Bias

Identify signs that a text presents an unfairly one-sided view.

Bias is a strong preference for one side that leads to an unfair or incomplete presentation. Having a point of view is normal; bias goes further when the author ignores evidence, misrepresents other views, or relies on emotion instead of facts. Signs of bias include one-sided evidence, loaded language, stereotypes or broad generalizations ('everyone knows,' 'all teenagers'), missing sources, and personal attacks instead of arguments. Here's an original example: 'All video games rot kids' brains.

Every parent I know agrees. Game makers only care about money. ' Notice the generalization ('all'), the weak evidence (one person's acquaintances), and the attack on motives instead of facts. A less biased version might say: 'Some studies link heavy gaming with less sleep, while others find puzzle games can improve problem-solving. ' Spotting bias doesn't mean rejecting a text entirely. It means reading carefully, checking claims elsewhere, and recognizing what perspective might be missing.
