How Structure Supports an Argument

Analyze why an author organizes an argument in a particular order.

The order of an argument is a choice, and it affects how persuasive the argument is. Authors commonly use several patterns. Problem-solution presents a problem vividly, then offers the solution, so readers are ready to accept it. Strongest-last saves the most powerful reason for the end so it lingers. Counterclaim-then-rebuttal addresses doubts before they grow. Chronological order shows how a situation developed over time to explain why action is needed now. Consider an editorial about a dangerous crosswalk.

It opens with a near-accident (problem made vivid), then gives statistics on crashes (evidence), then answers the objection that crossing guards cost too much (counterclaim-rebuttal), and ends with a call to vote for a traffic light (solution). Each step prepares the reader for the next. When analyzing structure, do not just name the pattern; explain why that order helps the author's purpose. Asking 'What if this part came first instead? ' often reveals the reason.

• 1Order is a deliberate choice that affects persuasion.
• 2Patterns include problem-solution and strongest-last.
• 3Explain why the order helps the purpose.
