Slowing Down for Dense Nonfiction

Adjust your reading rate when a text is packed with new ideas and terms.

Some texts carry a lot of information in very few words. A science textbook sentence such as 'Photosynthesis converts light energy into chemical energy stored in glucose' contains three big ideas: a process, an energy change, and where the energy ends up. Reading it at the speed you read a novel would let those ideas slip by. Signs that a text is dense: many technical terms, long sentences, numbers or formulas, and paragraphs where every sentence adds a new fact. When you notice them, slow down on purpose.

Read one sentence, pause, and restate it in your own words: 'Plants turn sunlight into sugar energy. ' If you cannot restate it, reread before moving on. Slowing down is not a sign of weak reading. Skilled readers constantly shift gears, going quickly through easy passages and deliberately slowly through hard ones.

• 1Dense texts pack many ideas into few words
• 2Watch for technical terms, long sentences, and data
• 3Restate each sentence in your own words before moving on
• 4Changing speed is a skill, not a weakness
