Central Ideas in Biography and Narrative Nonfiction

Find the central idea in true stories about real people and events.

Biographies and narrative nonfiction tell true stories, so they read like fiction, with scenes, dialogue, and suspense. But they still have a central idea: the point the author wants you to understand about the person or event. It's not just 'what happened'; it's what the events show. Consider an original short biography of a woman who taught herself to repair radios in her village, then trained dozens of young people, eventually opening a repair school. A list of events is not the central idea.

A central idea might be: 'Her story shows how one person's curiosity, shared generously, can create opportunities for a whole community. ' To find it, notice which events the author chooses to describe in detail, which quotes from the person are included, and how the text ends. Authors select from a whole life, so their choices reveal their point. Ask: Why did the author tell this story, and what should I learn from this life?
