The American Civil War, which lasted from 1861 to 1865, was primarily caused by tensions over slavery. The northern states, known as the Union, opposed the expansion of slavery into new territories and states, believing it was morally wrong. In contrast, the southern states, or the Confederacy, relied on slavery for their agricultural economy and wanted to maintain their way of life. A significant event that heightened these tensions was the election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860. Lincoln's platform included stopping the spread of slavery, which alarmed many southerners. As a result, several southern states seceded from the Union, leading to the outbreak of war.
