The government implemented policies to help rebuild the economy and infrastructure, such as the Freedmen's Bureau, which provided food, education, and legal assistance to newly freed African Americans. One concrete example of Reconstruction’s impact was the passage of the 14th Amendment in 1868, which granted citizenship to all people born in the United States, including former slaves. However, the period faced challenges, including resistance from Southern states, which created laws to limit the rights of African Americans. By 1877, Reconstruction ended, leaving many issues unresolved, including racial discrimination and economic inequality that would continue for years to come.
