The Vietnam Era refers to the period during the 1950s to the mid-1970s when the United States was heavily involved in the Vietnam War. This conflict began as a struggle between North Vietnam, supported by communist allies, and South Vietnam, backed by the U.S. and other anti-communist nations. The war was marked by intense fighting, widespread protests in the U.S., and significant media coverage, making it one of the first 'television wars.' One example of this was the Tet Offensive in 1968, when North Vietnamese forces launched a surprise attack on the Vietnamese New Year, shocking the American public and changing perceptions about the war. The Vietnam Era also led to important changes in U.S. policies, such as the War Powers Act, which aimed to limit the president's ability to send troops into combat without Congressional approval.
