Poetry Collections and Novels in Verse

Enjoy poetry for its own sake and discover stories told entirely in poems.

Poetry is meant to be savored, not rushed. A poetry collection lets you dip in anywhere: read one poem, think about it, read it again aloud, and move on when you're ready. Look for poems about everyday experiences, such as a first day, a pet, or a big game, because they often say something you've felt but never put into words. Novels in verse tell a full story through a series of poems. Their short lines and white space make pages move quickly, but each poem is packed with emotion.

Here is an original example of what a page might look like: 'Mom says / the new apartment / has good light. / I say / it has no / Abuela down the hall. ' In a few lines, you understand a move, a loss, and a disagreement. When reading verse, notice line breaks, repeated words, and how the white space creates pauses. Try reading favorite poems aloud, and copy lines you love into your reading journal.
