Theme: The Story's Message About Life

Develop a theme statement and trace how events and characters build it.

A topic is a single word or phrase, like 'friendship' or 'courage. ' A theme is a complete statement about life that the story suggests, such as 'True friendship means telling hard truths. ' Themes are usually implied, so you build them from evidence: what the main character learns, how conflicts resolve, what the title emphasizes, and what changes. Avoid clichés and commands. 'Be nice' is a command; 'Kindness can change how people see themselves' is a theme.

Example: an original story follows Omar, who hides his stutter by refusing to speak in class. A new teacher asks him to read his poem to a small group; his voice shakes, but a classmate says, 'That was the best one. ' The story ends with Omar raising his hand. Theme: 'Being heard can matter more than speaking perfectly. ' Trace it: hiding at the start, risk in the middle, growth at the end. A theme should hold true for the whole story, not just one scene.
