Comparing a Story and Its Modern Retelling

Compare an original tale with a modern version and explain what the changes accomplish.

Many stories are retold: myths, fairy tales, and folktales are updated with new settings, characters, or points of view. Comparing versions helps you see the author's choices. Start by listing what stays the same (often the basic plot pattern or theme) and what changes (setting, time period, narrator, ending). Then ask why the changes were made. Example: a traditional fable tells of a hare who loses a race to a tortoise because he naps, with the moral that slow and steady wins.

An original modern retelling sets the race at a school science fair. A flashy student rushes a project and skips testing; a quieter student checks every step. The pattern and moral stay, but the setting connects the lesson to schoolwork, and making both competitors human allows inner thoughts and dialogue. Some retellings even flip the theme, perhaps suggesting the hare deserved rest. Strong comparisons always explain the effect of each change.
